Student Hit By Falling Mattress

September 21, 2012

A college kid walking home from class in the Financial District was knocked out cold when he was hit by a mattress that was apparently blown off the roof of a swank high-rise.

“I would have preferred to have not been hit by a mattress, but I’m trying not to complain,” said good-natured Jesse Scott Owen, 18, laughing off the freak accident, which happened at around 1 p.m. Tuesday on Broad Street.

Owens said his mother freaked out when she found out about the bizarre episode. “The police called her and she said, ‘Oh, no, he’s arrested!’ They said, ‘He got injured,’ ” he recalled. “She said, ‘Oh, my goodness!’ ”

Owens, a Florida native studying journalism at nearby The King’s College, was heading to a subway station when he got clocked.

The mattress was blown off the 34th- floor lounge of the Setai Wall Street residential tower by heavy winds, witnesses told Owens, who was treated for a herniated disc in his neck.
